ST AUSTELL SENIOR BAND
The
ST AUSTELL TOWN BAND featured above has a long history dating back to 1838. In 1852 was
documented as a "Sax Horn Band" and prior to the First World War references to
the St Austell Volunteer Band (Infintary) were made.
From 1919 to 1939 the band progressed well, and in that period contested with success at
the Crystal Palace, but in 1940 was forced to disband, only to reform again in the early
part of 1943. The band at this time was held in the highest esteem and broadcasts on the
radio were a regular occurence. In 1946 the band won the West of England Regional Finals
in the Championship Section.
After the war players returned to their home towns, and so the band declined somewhat but
regained Championship status in 1967. The band came into prominance again in 1972 with a
2nd place at the WD and HO Wills contest at The Royal Albert Hall. In 1973 the band was
placed 5th in the finals of the National Brass Band Championships.
The band has achieved many success since then and has achieved national recognition,
competing at most of the major events in the country. Victories recorded winners of the
Pontins Championships (One of only two Cornish bands ever to win this prize), 3 times
winners of the Yeovil Entertainment Contest and, more recently in 1999 becoming French
Open Champions after travelling out to contest against some of Europes finest bands.
St Austell Town Band has no sponsor, it is self supporting by means
of its own Social Club, founded in 1969 and now boasts of fine premises with over 2000
members. Rehearsal facilities which have been improved, funded in part by the National
Lottery through the Arts Council of England and the Foundation for Sports and Art make
this an extraordinary story of great success.
