Sound Insulation Testing – Everything You Need To Know

Building regulations include few basic standards that should be taken care of while constructing a building. One such test is sound test. According to building regulations Part E, building should be tested prior to completion and should meet all the desired standards.

Two tests are performed-

1) Airborne resistance test

2) Impact test

Sound test is done to ensure that the building has required airborne sound insulation performance level. Airborne test measures resistance to airborne sound passage and is carried with the help of a loudspeaker emitting a constant sound, over a range of frequencies, which is known as pink sound. The loudspeaker is placed on one side of the partition and desired sound levels measured on the other side of the partition.

The microphone measures the sound pressure level. Between the two partitions difference in sound level is measured, thus more difference between the two is a sign of better acoustic performance.

These tests are simple test that ensures that your building have desired level of airborne and impact sound insulation performance so that they can be approved under Part E regulation standards. One should opt for two simple measures. These two simple measures include-

-Pre completion testing

-Build to robust testing

Following criteria must be fulfilled. Until and unless these criteria are fulfilled your development will not pass sound test-

-Proper ventilation system should be installed.

-Internal doors should be hung.

-While performing the sound test no external noises should act as an obstacle else proper testing can’t be done.

-Walls and external doors must be installed, glazed and closed.

These sound tests are free of cost as before the completion of building these tests is mandatory to be performed else building may not get recognition.

Apart from airborne testing there is another method known as impact testing-

It makes use of a tapping machine which simulates footfall. The machine is placed in the upper part of the room to be tested and sound received in the lower part of the room are measured.

The approved document E has following criteria-

1) E1-protection against sound from other parts of the building and nearby buildings.

2) E2-protection from sound within the residing house.

3) E3- reverberation in common internal parts of building containing rooms.

4) E4-acoustic conditions in schools.

The main standards are E1 and E2, which are looking for while making a geluidsmeting laten uitvoeren building. These two standards should be fulfilled for getting approval.

Causes of sound test failure are flanking transmission. Sound should not go straight though building element. It generally occurs when sound can’t cross the walls and it will spread without reaching the other side of the partition.

The test is performed on a standard set which comprises of-

-2 airborne wall tests.

-2 airborne floor tests.

-2 impact floor tests.
